Jesus answered (the rich man), "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give them to the poor; and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come, follow Me."

When the rich man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of Heaven."  

In today’s Scripture, the great servant of Jesus, the apostle Matthew, presents Jesus as the Messiah sent by God to redeem His people to Him; and to fulfill the Old Testament prophesy of a Savior.  Amen.  In our particular Scripture passage, Jesus has been asked by a rich man about what "good thing" that the rich man must do to gain eternal life.  Jesus tells the rich man that he must keep the commandments.  After the rich man tells Jesus that he has done all those things, he asks Jesus what does he still lack (Matthew 19:16-20).  That same question is being asked by people today who love the possessions of the world.  Our Scripture begins with..., Jesus answered (the rich man), "If you want to be perfect."  Jesus wants commitment to Him!  Amen!  Our Word continues with this challenge to those that want eternal life..., "Go, sell your possessions and give them to the poor; and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come, follow Me."  If you want everlasting life with God; you must change what is important to you on earth!  After you do that..., then you can follow Jesus!  Hallelujah!  The Word of God tells us..., "When the rich man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth."  Joy should be in following Jesus; not sadness in leaving the lusts of the world!  Glory!  And the Scriptures end with this truth..., Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of Heaven."  If you are not willing to leave the desires of the world; it is hard for you to turn and follow Jesus to eternal life with God!  Glory Hallelujah!  Our Scripture is speaking to all people!  This is not about money or wealth; this is about making a decision on what is more important!  The world or the Kingdom of Heaven!  Which do you desire more?  Jesus told the rich man to get rid of all his possessions, the things of the world that he loved; give them to the poor; and then follow Me.  And today..., Jesus is saying the same thing to all people who want eternal life with God!  Get rid of the worldly desires that you love!  Stop keeping these things first in your life!  Then..., you can come follow Jesus!  The rich man loved the things of the world that he possessed; and he was sad to think that he would have to get rid of them to follow Jesus to receive eternal life.  The rich man wanted to know what "things" or deeds, he could do to earn eternal life.  And there is nothing he could do; or you and I can do..., to earn eternal life!  Nothing!  The rich man wanted a "thing" answer..., and Jesus wanted a "commitment" answer!  Praise God!  Amen!  Today..., Jesus is still looking for commitment answers from those who want to follow Him to eternal life with God!  Too many people, including those who have confessed to love Jesus; still want their worldly life..., and will not commit to Jesus!  The rich man, like a lot of people today; wants the goal of everlasting life with God through Jesus.  Glory!  But they do not want to let go of the worldly possessions, or "things" that they desire more than Jesus!  Tell the truth today!  You want Jesus to give you everlasting life; but you still have not committed to Jesus to put Him first in your life.  Amen!  If this is you; Jesus is speaking directly to you!  Each of us must make a decision on what is more important!  The world or the Kingdom of Heaven!  Which do you desire more?  Get rid of the worldly desires that you love!  Stop keeping these things first in your life!  Make a commitment to Jesus!  Then..., you can come follow Jesus!  Amen.
